Matador Says Google/YouTube Rejected Perfume Genius Promo Video for Being "Not Family Safe"

To promote the Perfume Genius album Put Your Back N 2 It, Matador Records created a short video advertisement. The 16-second clip features footage of Perfume Genius’ Mike Hadreas in an embrace with porn star Arpad Miklos, from the “Hood” video.  However, when Matador tried to upload the video to YouTube, they say it was rejected, for “promoting mature sexual themes” and being “not family safe.” Both Hadreas and Miklos are shirtless in the clip, but neither is fully nude.

Man, fuck this. Ads and music videos alike are allowed to basically be soft-core porn these days, and are allowed to be outright hostile towards women sometimes, but we can’t show two shirtless guys touching each other’s arms and looking into each other’s eyes? This video is actually super tame. It’s totally PG!

Fuck this.

It’s a crying shame we have to live in a world where this tiny little clip— a heartfelt, beautiful expression of romance— gets cut from the biggest video site in the world just because some people aren’t comfortable with their sexuality. I’m not exactly sure where to find “mature sexual themes” in a shirtless embrace between two men. I’ve seen Victoria Secret commercials more erotic. But then again, this shows that you’re only allowed to express your sexuality when it appeases heterosexual American society. Go figure.

Whoever’s responsible for this should be embarrassed of themselves.
