Martin Douglas’ Style Recipe

You know, people ask me all the time, “Martin Douglas, how’d you get to become such a stylish dude?” And I tell them the old joke: A guy gets in a cab and asks how to get to Carnegie Hall, and the cab driver says, “Practice.” (Sorry, I’ve watched the Steve Guttenberg episode of Party Down like three times in the past two days.) Essentially, I don’t know why people care about getting style tips from me, but since I’m sick and bored and have been sitting at my computer all day and probably will be doing so until I pass out on this NyQuil in two hours, I’ll throw them a bone.

  • One part surf-punk
  • Two parts women who run menswear blogs
  • One part The Strokes (I have a very soft spot in my heart for tight jeans and tight-fitting jackets)
  • A pinch of ‘80’s/’90’s hip-hop
  • One part Ryan Gosling in Drive (that movie was seriously a major epiphany for a lot of stylish dudes)
  • A dash of post-The Love Below Andre 3000
  • Random bits of trinkets of various ephemera (for me in particular: twee-punk, greaser gangs, bank heist movies, Dirty Beaches, things I stumble upon while reading GQ, lots and lots and lots of plaid)
